I just finished reading "Blue Like Jazz" by Donald Miller. I really recommend this book to anyone who wants a realistic and funny look at Christianity. The story basically just follows the author as he talks about his experiences, and how he has shaped his faith. He doesn't pull any punches, and I can definitely relate to a lot of the ways he thinks about his faith.
One of the issues that I could appreciate was how he talked about living as a Christian on a "liberal" campus. I just finished four years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison which likes to consider itself a progressive student body. At times it was hard to say you were Christian without people thinking that you were a strong Conservative with a judgmental attitude. That of course is not my personality (I hope!) and trying to change that perception was hard. In this book Miller talks about how he went about sharing his faith in what could be a somewhat hostile, if not indifferent, environment.
Check it out. I am about to start another book of his called "Searching for God knows What." I'll let you know how it compares.

I just started the book today. I got to around chapter 4. I'm really liking it so far. I think it's on par with Rob Bell's stuff so far. Different but good!

I really enjoyed Blue Like Jazz. I was actually cracking up out loud while I was reading it. I got to hear Donald Miller speak this weekend and he really is hysterical. The messages God speaks through him put my faith to the test and open my eyes to the traps we sometimes fall into regarding religion and God. Don's not afraid to speak from the heart and give it to us straight. He gave a speech on how Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is really a book about the Christian conversion experience and it was so backed up with evidence, it's hard to look at it any other way now. I can't wait to read his other books!

On a somewhat related topic... I couldn't stop laughing in the book when he was describing when he took his date to Romeo and Juliet. Amazing.

I finally got around to finishing it! I thought it was a really good read and highly recommend it. I had been reading it a chapter at a time up until today but the last few chapters I just couldn't stop and finished it in one sitting.
