Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends... faith, hope and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. ~1 Corinthians 13:4-8,13 ESV
Now, re-read the passage, and every time you read the word "love" insert your own name instead. For example I would read it as: "Justin is patient and kind", etc....
This exercise comes from the book Crazy Love by Francis Chan. I found it really powerful because Jesus tells us that the two most important commands are "to love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and strength," and "to love your neighbor as yourself." In the big picture, love is what it is all about, and in this passage in Corinthians we are told what love is.
We are supposed to be the expression of Christ's love in this world. Can we truly say that we are all of the things that this passage says love is? I know in my case I have some work to do.....
